Bio
Growing up, I spent several years living abroad in India and Africa, with intermittent years in Kansas. I came to Minnesota to go to college, married a mad scientist, and settled down to live and write in Minneapolis.

Writing

My first novel, Serenade of Blood & Silver, is a fantasy about a drifter who rescues an abused horse that is not what it seems. When they flee into the Far Desert to escape pursuit, they sign their death warrants, and the only way they can survive is if they learn to rely on each other. The setting of Serenade of Blood & Silver is influenced by the American Old West and by sub-Saharan West Africa, where I lived for three years. This is at the "I stuck a fork in it and called it done until somebody pays me to make changes" stage, and I'm busy courting publishers and agents for it.

My second novel, Vicesteed, is a steampunk science fiction novel that is equal proportions locked-room murder mystery, exploration of how society forms identity, and high-octane quest for vengeance. Who can resist a science fiction story with sex, violence, romance, spaceships, androids, Victorian England, exploding clockwork sculptures, robots, and a locked-room murder? Vicesteed is currently in the editing phase.

I keep a freewriting journal at [info]penthius (friend it and get a snippet of fiction on your friends' page every day!).

I've had a few short stories published, too.
* "Waiting," Alienskin Magazine, April 2003 Issue
* "The Perfect Costume," Dark Krypt Horror Zine, Oct/Nov 2003 Issue
* "Blood for Oil," Allegory - formerly Peridot Books - September 2006 Issue
* "Periwinkle Eyes" - Art Times, March 2009.

I compile Aswiebe's Market List, a resource for science fiction, fantasy, and horror writing markets.

From Thanksgiving to Christmas, I'm running a speculative winter holiday-themed contest for fiction, artwork and poetry: Spec the Halls. Go there to submit or to read the submissions.

Photography
You can see some of my photography on my website (although I desperately need to update and redesign it).

I have a Flickr account at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aswiebe/. Some, but not all, of the photographs that I post there are also posted here.

One of my photographs was also used as cover art for Queen of the Country, a posthumous commemorative volume of dark, surreal short stories by D.G.K. Goldberg.

This year I signed up to split a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share, so I've been doing a fair amount of food blogging and photography because of that.

Martial Arts
I'm a student at the Minneapolis Hwa Rang Do Academy of Healing and Martial Arts. Hwa Rang Do is a Korean martial art that incorporates both hard-style punching and kicking and soft-style grappling, groundfighting, joint manipulation, pressure points, etc. Right now I'm a half-black belt in Tae Soo Do, the undergraduate version.
